Tale-Bearing
(Namimah)
Tale-bearing,
(namimah) is defined as spreading words among believers with
the purpose of stirring up enmity and problems between them.
This matter is forbidden, unlawful and sinful.
Allah
dispraised such people in the Qur'an in Surat al-Qalam, Ayahs
10-12:
10. Heed not the type of despicable men,-
ready with oaths,
11. A slanderer, going about with calumnies (defamation),
12. (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond
bounds, deep in sin,
Those
who commit tale-bearing (namimah) will first see the hell-fire.
That is, the Muslim who died without repenting of his sin of
tale-bearing (namimah) will be tortured in Hellfire before entering
Paradise.

1, Book 4, Number 215:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
Once
the Prophet, while passing through one of the grave-yards of
Medina or Mecca heard the voices of two persons who were being
tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, "These two
persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid)."
The Prophet then added, "Yes! (they
are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never
saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other
used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends).
The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree,
broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being
asked why he had done so, he replied, "I hope that their
torture might be lessened, till these get dried."
Moreover, know that the reasons for most of the torture
in the grave are gossip (ghibah), tale-bearing (namimah), and
not clearing oneself from urine.
If
someone comes to you with namimah,
1. Do not accept what he says, for the tale-bearer is a transgressor
(fasiq), whose testimony is unacceptable.
2. Forbid him from what he is doing, and advise him.
3. Dislike the tale-bearer for the sake of Allah, for he is
despicable before Allah.
4. Do not assume anything bad about the person that is being
mentioned to you.
5. Do not let his [the tale-bearer's] words lead you to spying,
for Allah has prohibited this. 6. Do not spread the tale.
